Civil Services Exam 2012-CSAT Model Test 2-Part 2

Indian Civil Services Exam-2012-CSAT Model Test Paper 2-Part 2

Directions for the following 4 (four) items:
Read the following passage and answer the items that follow. Your answers to these items should be based on the passage only.

Passage 7:
What is true of bodily life is true of mental life. Ability to pick out the overtones in a chord testifies to past musical training, skill in typewriting to months of practice, dislike of cats to an episode in childhood of which there may be no remembrance. This last example will serve to bring out the difference between retentiveness and memory. The events of a life story would form no story, could have no continuity one with another, unless at every moment the past lived on into the present. But such continuity does not necessarily involve knowledge of the past. If there were memory in the strict sense of the cat episode, there would be a recognised continuity between the present dislike of cats and the episode in question. But there may be no recall of this far away episode of childhood. The individual may only know of it through the testimony of others.

Passage 2:
The awareness of equal corruption will be better emotional basis for the so-called multi-radical commonwealth, of which much is made, than its professed principle – the pursuit of common aims in world politics aims which are so rarefied that a large volume of artificial political oxygen is needed to keep that body-politic breathing. After all, it cannot be denied that even the United States and the Soviet Union are pursuing common aims in world affairs, such as peace, disarmament, democracy, technological progress, as well as freedom as understood by each. But that is not preventing them from doing things which might lead to the destruction or near destruction of mankind. Thus, common aims would seem to be very undependable as guarantees for goodwill and co-operation among nations. On the contrary, a frank admission of being equal sinners would at least encourage charity and discourage moral arrogance. That would be better foundation for integration for international and multi-racial co-operation.

            Answer:   (C)

Passage 5:
Most of us use the products of science-railways, aero planes, electricity, wireless and thousands of others-without thinking how they came into existence. We take them for granted, as if we were entitled to them as a matter of right. And we are very proud of the fact that we live in an advanced age and are ourselves so very ‘advanced’. Now, there is no doubt that our age is a very different one from previous ages and I think it is perfectly correct to say that it is far more advanced. But that is a different from saying that we as individuals or groups are more advanced. It would be the height of absurdity to say that because an engine-driver can run an engine and Plato and Socrates could not, the engine-driver is more advanced than, or is superior to, Plato or Socrates. But it would be perfectly correct to say that the engine itself is a more advanced method of locomotion than Plato’s chariot was.

A)    The present age is far more advanced than all previous ages in some respects

A)    Modern people as individual are not more advanced than their prerecession.
